Our Heritage porcelain paving range includes tiles that effortlessly recreate the aesthetic and feel of natural stone paving.

The most popular option in this range is our Heritage Oro Porcelain Paving. This tile is often chosen by our customers who are debating between it and our Antique Fossil Pearl Limestone for their project.

In this article we will compare the two options to see which is the best fit for you.

So what makes Heritage Oro such a good alternative to natural Egyptian Limestone?

  1. Definition of Print: Whilst some porcelain tiles have a low quality print definition and appear to be very two dimensional, Heritage Oro has incredible depth and colour to it. This helps create a very realistic tile and once laid hard to tell is not made from natural limestone.
  2. Surface Texture: Natural Limestone has a varied surface texture with occasional pitting and rough/smooth sections from piece to piece. In order to replicate this Heritage Oro also has pitted and varied surface texture. This increases the grip of the tiles as well as adding a level or realism.
  3. Tumbled edges: Our Antique Fossil Pearl Limestone paving has a tumbled finish. This chips and rounds the edges of the stone. In order to replicate this the edges of Heritage Oro have a slightly wavy edge that pitches down on the perimeter of the tiles. Once grouted in this gives the impression of a tumbled edge on the porcelain. To see this view the image gallery below.
  4. Durability and MaintenanceReal Egyptian limestone paving requires sealing and careful cleaning to maintain it at its best. The colour of limestone paving also fades and lightens over time. Porcelain paving like Heritage Oro does not require sealing and is highly stain resistant. This makes it easy to clean and overall lower maintenance.

What are the limitations with porcelain paving?

Although porcelain paving has many benefits over natural stone it also has limitations. This is particularly apparent when it comes to thickness. Outdoor porcelain paving is only available in 20mm thickness and the colour of the edge of the tile is not completely the same as the top.

Whereas we offer our Antique Fossil Pearl limestone at 40mm thickness with different edge profiles for swimming pool copings and step treads off the shelf. The edge profiles include full bullnose and rebated down stand with pencil edge profile. These create an impressive finish for swimming pool projects, areas of wall coping and steps.

Whereas porcelain has to be sent to a stone mason for a bullnose or pencil edge profile to be applied. This adds lead time and cost to a project and you are limited to the 20mm thickness of the tile which doesn’t leave quite as an impressive edge.

We have both the Heritage Oro and Antique Fossil Pearl Limestone available in indoor and outdoor finishes.
